Vatican could soon have a professional soccer team to compete with major national and international teams
Tarcisio Bertone, Roman Catholic archbishop and cardinal, current Holy See's Secretary of State, declared yesterday that the Vatican could soon have a professional soccer team to compete on equal footing with major national and international teams.
"If, for example we recruited all our brasilian students from the pontificial universities and the kids from the parish recreation centres," said Bertone, "we could build a magnificent team".
Cardinal Bertone is known to be passionately fond of soccer and he's not alone between the highest Vatican prelates. Also Pope John Paul II was a passionate sportsman and, in his youth, played soccer as a goalkeeper.
