Host Germany Ousted From World Cup After Losing to Italy
Italy has defeated host Germany, 2-0, to reach the championship game of the World Cup football tournament.
Fabio Grosso and Alessandro del Piero each scored late in overtime Tuesday in Dortmund. Grosso curled a left-footed shot past the diving German goalkeeper Jens Lehmann in the 119th minute. Del Piero added another during injury time of the extra period. Both goalkeepers made spectacular saves to keep the semifinal game scoreless throughout 90 minutes of regulation time.
The Italians now have two wins and two draws against Germany in World Cup play. Italy has not lost since it fell to Slovenia, 1-0, in October 2004. The three-time World Cup champion Italians will play in Sunday's final against either France or Portugal. That match will be played Wednesday.
